Frequently Asked Questions

Which notebooks does Muryō work with?

The beauty of Muryō is that you don’t need a specific notebook or planner. I encourage you to use your favorite notebook. My favorite notebook is the Leuchtturm1917 Dotted A5*, but Muryō will work with any standard Moleskine or Leuchtturm A5 sized notebook. It will even work with larger notebooks, sketchbooks, and planners.

I still need to work out whether or not I should create a petite Muryō for smaller notebooks. If you’re interested in a different sized Muryō insert please contact me and let me know.

What size notebook does Muryō work best with?

Muryō was designed to work with an A5 notebook. A5 notebooks are 21.0 cm x 14.8 cm or 5-1/2 inches x 8 inches. Muryō inserts will work with larger notebooks, but you’ll have a tougher time with smaller notebooks.

Will Muryō ever be made for smaller notebooks?

I have received interest in Muryō cards fit for B6 or A6 notebooks. Today I’m focused on releasing Muryō with a more standard size, but I will definitely release Muryō in different sizes if I have enough interest in it.

What does Muryō mean?

Muryō or 無料, is a Japanese word that means “free” or “no charge.” I chose the word Muryō because Muryō cards give you the freedom to write without limitations or rules, but I also want to make Muryō available as a free digital download for students or others who may not be able to financially support Muryō. So the meaning of Muryō is a bit of a pun.

I love Bullet Journaling. Can I use Muryō?

Absolutely! Muryō works with Bullet Journaling techniques and methodologies. They are a great compliment to one another.

Do you have to start on the first of the month?

Each Muryō card is good for one month. Start using Muryō any day of the week or month; there is no requirement to start on a Monday or the first of the month.

How long does a Muryō card last?

When your card gets used up, usually after tracking 30 to 31 days of habits, you archive the card by permanently attaching it to your notebook, preserving your work for years to come. At the end of the month archive Muryō by taping, stapling, or gluing it into your notebook, read more on that here.

Can you use a pencil with Muryō?

Absolutely, you aren’t required to use special instruments or notebooks. Pencils work great when marking the edge of the page.

Is Muryō waterproof?

Unfortunately no.

What is Muryō made from?

Muryō cards are printed on sustainably sourced 13pt uncoated partially recycled cardstock paper. The uncoated cardstock soaks up the ink from your pens beautifully and creates a lovely texture to work with.

Is Muryō environmentally friendly?

We are working with a printer that is dedicated to reducing its impact on the environment. Our printer recycles all leftover material, uses mostly or entirely recycled materials when possible, and prints with soy and vegetable-based inks, reducing the use of petroleum-based inks.

Muryō cards are printed on uncoated cardstock made from 30% recycled and SFI Certified paper, and when the wood pulp used to make this paper is sourced from a well-managed forest, it can be just as eco-friendly as fully recycled paper.

Can I cancel my order at anytime?

Yes, if you’re subscribed to Muryō you can cancel anytime. Just head over to and log into My Subscriptions under My Account. From there you can cancel your subscription at anytime, no fuss, no pressure, no mess. Though I’ll be sorry to see you go.

If you’ve placed a pack or bulk order you can try to cancel your order on the My Orders page. However, please be aware that we can’t cancel orders that have been shipped. If your order is already in the mail we’ll have to chat in order for you to return your order and get a refund.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, I can definitely refund your order if there was something wrong with it, or if it didn’t show up for some reason (pretty rare circumstances).

If there’s nothing wrong with your order, but you’d still like a refund I’m open to chatting about it. However, I ask that you recognize that Muryō isn’t an Amazon sized business with unlimited funds. I created Muryō to help people, and we are a small family-owned business operating on the revenue we receive from orders.

Is there a free version of Muryō?

I hope to release Muryō under a Creative Commons license so you, your friends, and your students can benefit from Muryō even if money is tight. I need to cross the t’s and dot the i’s to make sure that the design and license are all set up correctly. If you’d like to be notified when the free downloadable version of Muryō is available please drop me a line here.
